Vision

The aim of our school is to engender an atmosphere in which a young person feels safe and valued. We want young people to take their learning to the highest levels possible and to continue asking the important questions into adulthood. We cannot take learning for granted, it requires a special place and special relationships to make it happen. A young person will feel valued at Ralph Allen School and be able to achieve beyond his or her expectation.

Values

At Ralph Allen School we celebrate the individual. Each young person has something unique. Our job is to find and nurture the distinctive talents and abilities of every child. I believe we provide the best climate a parent can find for individual growth and learning. Opportunities abound for creative and sporting activities, at the most challenging levels and simply for fun.

Community

The school is a community and everyone plays their part in making it the supportive and friendly place it is. Governors are ambitious for the school and ensure that high standards are set and maintained. Parents are an important part of the community and are encouraged to be involved in the school and their children's education. An active Parent Teacher Association raises funds and holds advice evenings for parents. Each year a full report is sent home and at least one parents' evening is held to keep parents fully informed about the progress and welfare of each child.

Care

Although it may seem a big place, Ralph Allen School behaves like a small place and looks after all its members. We have a very strong pastoral system with plenty of experience and knowledge. All adults in school form special relationships with young people whether they are tutors, teachers, support staff or lunchtime supervisors. There are clear policies about bullying and everyone is taught that the school respects the individual's right to learn and achieve.

Communication

A monthly Headteacher's Newsletter gives you school news and detailed information about the activities in departments and year groups. The pupil planner is purpose-designed to give each young person all the school information he or she needs. The planners inform and aid everyone's ability to know what needs to be done. In the planner you will find targets for all subjects that teachers discuss with pupils. These targets tell parents about the progress their son or daughter is making.

The school is amply equipped with computers and students make full use of the Ralph Allen intranet and multi-media.

Celebration

The school recognises that we all need praise and young people especially flourish in an environment where their efforts are acknowledged. The credit system shows rewards in the planner, letters of praise are sent home and each year our Key Stage Three Achievement Evening celebrates attitude and excellence.

Creativity

We know that young people learn best when they can determine their own goals and work towards them. We encourage creativity by providing an environment where young people are given the tools to explore their learning to the limits.

The Arts are strong in all areas and each year a large scale production showcases the performing arts. We also run a dance show with over a hundred boys and girls involved. The visual environment is enhanced by the works of students at all stages including photography, for which we have a dedicated suite.

Music concerts take place annually with instrumental and voice tuition also on offer.

Challenge

All members of Ralph Allen School work hard to deliver high standards because we are ambitious for young people. We want to match and even exceed the expectations parents have of their children. We provide a fantastically rich variety of extended curriculum opportunities. Our sports are recognised for excellence and high levels of participation in the coveted 'Sports Mark Gold' standard. Ofsted states that the school provides: 'Teaching of a consistently high quality'. Young people have opportunities to exercise citizenship through school council and mentoring schemes. We enter and win a great many national and local competitions each year.
